Our Newport News Veterinarian Offers Emergency Care Tips

Spotting an emergency situation is another vital step in getting veterinary hospital care quickly. Some of the more common Newport News and Hampton animal emergencies include insect stings, household poisonings, a fall, accident, auto collision or other type of severe trauma. Area animals can also suffer from heatstroke, especially during the hot summer months, severe allergic reactions, and ingesting objects.

Even if the cause of an emergency is not immediately apparent, symptoms can indicate a pet needs immediate care from our animal clinic. The most severe signs include a loss of consciousness, apparent paralysis, seizures and excessive bleeding. Pets also require immediate care if they have difficulty standing, rapid breathing, a change in body temperature, and an irregular pulse that is extremely weak, rapid or fluctuating. Pale gums can also indicate an emergency situation that demands immediate attention from our veterinary clinic, as can unresponsiveness, gasping, and difficulty breathing.

Pets in emergency situations require delicate and careful care, especially since they might act aggressively toward their owners even if they are usually the mildest animals. Pet owners need to protect themselves from injuries and call for help if an animal displays aggression. Severely injured pets should be approached calmly and slowly and, if passive, placed onto a makeshift stretcher for transport to our animal hospital.

We are experienced in many advanced surgical procedures, including laser surgery, with equally advanced equipment and training.

Our veterinary hospital treats emergencies and urgent care situations during business hours. For after hours care, please contact  the emergency veterinary clinic listed above.
